Google has launched a new real-time data product for journalists
Last year, Google announced that it would invest $300 million in its News Initiative program, which includes funding for Independent Journalism and products developed by Google. One product is News Consumer Insights, which has been used by media such as BuzzFeed, Business Insider and Conde Nast.
This requires collecting data through Google Analytics and making it more useful to publishers, especially when it comes to understanding different segments of the audience and whether they are likely to become paid subscribers.
It's turning raw data into business intelligence and operational insights, "said Amy Adams Harding, head of Google Analytics and Revenue Optimization and Publisher Development. Now, Google is building NCI products with a new tool called Real-time Content Insights.
As its name implies, RCI focuses on telling publishers what's happening on their websites and helping them identify hot news stories that attract more readers. Harding says the initial NCI data is more useful for publishers'business or audience development teams. RCI aims to "help our partners'editors understand the dynamics of their website content - what is the trend, what is declining and what is more attractive".
Google is not the first company to provide real-time data to news publishers, but Harding says this "off-the-shelf click-and-play" product is particularly useful for small newsrooms that don't have a lot of resources. And not particularly proficient in data.
